Gap Year Travel insurance

Postby mrskipling » Wed Aug 23, 2023 11:26 am

I know many parents here will have young children but I wanted some advice/recommendations for an older child going on a Gap year (for up to 6 months) and the insurance companies they may have used.  Recommendations for Companies and/or ones to avoid would be very useful.  I have been advised to look at a 4/5 Defacto rating.  Any other advice gratefully received re insurance cover.

Hi there! I totally understand your concern. When my older child went on a Gap Year, finding the right insurance was crucial. We opted for a well-rated insurance that provided comprehensive coverage. So we read sailing in turkey reviews and have good weekend

It’s hard to say because generally you’ll only find out if you’ve got good gap year insurance if you need to claim on it! There are companies out there that do specialist gap year insurance (World Nomads, Big Cat etc) and you probably want to go with one of these. Do your due diligence and check any reviews you can find. Also make sure your child is covered for any risky activities they may take part in such as bungee jumping. Don’t make the mistake of thinking they are covered by your family travel insurance (you obviously aren’t thinking this but some people reading this may be - that will generally only cover shorter trips and even then maybe not gap year travel as it’s often only when they’re in school or Uni.) The insurance isn’t cheap but then having your child medevacked home after a quad bike accident isn’t cheap either! Having said that prices do seem to vary quite a lot so shop around.

If you're all about that adrenaline rush like I am, taking the plunge with a parachute, you absolutely need to ensure you've got yourself covered with solid insurance. I recently snagged a fantastic skydive travel insurance package for my jumps through one of the specialized websites, and I can confidently recommend it to everyone. This insurance covers a wide range of risks associated with skydiving, from injuries to equipment damage. Signing up takes just a few minutes, and it keeps you covered for all your sky-high adventures. Don't gamble with your health and finances—insure your jumps and jump worry-free!
