Educational psychologist recommendation Post Reply

Hello,

I would like our eldest daughter to be seen by an educational psychologist but don't know where to start. She hasn't been doing well at school where she gets by with a lot of support in her homework (from us and a tutor). Her school (a very good local state school) runs booster classes across all subjects, all of which she attends. Beyond that we've had little support from the school because she's not bad enough to have been seen by the SENCO. There's something holding her back which we can't work out and we feel at a loss. We're thinking of moving her schools but need to understand her needs better. Has anyone had a similar experience? Have you needed to see an educational psychologist? If so please could you recommend one?

In addition to talking to a professional you may be interested in attending this event on the 8th of March to gather other views. It is called Learning support and your child, Navigating Education when all is not plain sailing.

There will be a great panel of experienced Heads and specialists to discuss learning support for children and the focus will be on those children who may be underperforming academically or struggling emotionally, or when something is not right but you don't know exactly what it is.

One of the speakers is Dr Josephine Storek , she is BPS Chartered Psychologist and has expert knowledge and interest in attention deficit, executive (dys)function and learning impairments, such as dyslexia.

Friends of ours have had the assessment done at Fairley HOuse's Assessment Clinic and recommend it highly. You can get it done (for about £800) even if your daughter isn't intending to go there and apparently it's very comprehensive and helpful. There is good info on their website. It's a shame to hear that your school isn't being more helpful, but I think you are right to follow your gut instinct! Even if they find there is nothing to worry about they can give good info and at least put your mind at rest. Good luck!
