My family have been “members” of the Wandsworth Common tennis “club” for years (it’s about 50 pounds a year for family membership).
These are the pay and play courts next to The Common Ground. (http://www.allstarcoaching.co.uk/)
Earlier this week we received an email from All Stars, who run the courts, explaining that if we wanted to be part of their annual Wimbledon tennis draw then we needed to turn up with our membership details on Saturday at 3.45pm and we would have the chance to buy the tickets at face value i.e. no booking fee and no mark up.
I almost dismissed this as not worth the effort but Mr NappyValleyNet was at a bit of a loose end so I dispatched him off on Saturday afternoon and about ten minutes later received an excited phone call.
“Half of Wandsworth is up here but they have 120 pairs of tickets to draw and there are about 200 people here, we might actually get something.”
Again I dismissed it as being too go
od to be true but about two hours later he walked through the front door with a pair of tickets for Court 2 on the Saturday for about fifty pounds a ticket!
It’s too late for this year but I wanted to publicise their scheme so you can all get ready for 2014.
This is how it works:
- The All Stars Tennis Club (ie the Wandsworth Common tennis centre) have one of the largest allocation of “grass roots” tickets for the Wimbledon tennis championships
- Any member of the club, who joined before a certain date (I think this is in January) AND who took up membership of the LTA at the same time is eligible for the draw.
- They have around 120 pairs of tickets available and today there were around 200 people applying for them
- They then draw numbers and over half the people who turned up get to buy tickets at face value. i.e. no price inflation or booking fees
- That’s it!
So on the one hand I know I am decreasing my chances but telling fifteen thousand Wandsworth mums about this scheme, but on the other I had to share!
