BBC Young Musician is the UK’s leading competition for young classical musicians, under the age of 18. The competition was established in 1978, and, despite its name, is broadcast on BBC Television and Radio, biennially.
Whitgift Upper Sixth Former, Hristiyan Hristov, who won a scholarship via Whitgift’s International Music Competition, underwent a gruelling audition in London, last year. Hristiyian successfully warded off competition, and made it through to the percussion category round, over hundreds of other hopefuls.
Only five individuals were picked for each category final, which included percussion, keyboard, strings, brass and woodwind. The finals were televised on Friday 22 April, and can be viewed here.
Hristiyan commented, ‘I didn’t expect to even pass the category audition… and after they told me I had passed, I was so excited. I’m still really, really excited about it.’
Hristiyan performed his three pieces beautifully, but was narrowly beaten to a position in the Grand Final, which takes place on 15 May.
Mrs Rosanna Whitfield, Director of Music at Whitgift, who entered him in to the competition, said, ‘Hristiyan is a fantastic ambassador for the School, and this was clearly reflected in both his stunning performances and outstanding work ethos throughout the whole competition. We are so terribly proud of his achievements and his personal growth.’
Dr Barnett, Headmaster of Whitgift, said of his future, ‘…he has limitless potential; he’s such an impressive young man.’
We wish Hristiyan every success in his musical accolades going forward.
