Hangmen Rehanged
May 27 @ 9:00 am – 10:00 pm

A collaboration between the National Theatre, Omnibus, Edible Cinema and Kings College London. What’s the second best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Hangmen Rehanged is a screening of Martin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning play first produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 2015, starring David Morrissey and Johnny Flynn. In association with NT Live, Kings’ College London presents its own screening, with a sensory experiment for audiences: fusing live performance, directed by Omnibus Artistic Director Marie McCarthy, music and culinary sensations; to evoke an indelible impression of England in the era of her last executioner. Responding to Martin McDonagh’s gallows humour: you will hear the voices of those who hanged, live music from the era of the ‘swinging’ fifties and sixties and the spectacle of a magician’s noose; whilst Edible Cinema heightens the audience experience through aroma, texture and taste: each guest is supplied with a tray of numbered mystery boxes containing a bite-sized tasting menu heightening specific moments in the film. Please join us for this unique show at Kings College London, The Strand, within walking distance from Covent Garden, Waterloo, Temple or the Embankment and times.

Mixed Circuits with Open Air Fit @ Wandsworth Common by the Skylark Cafe
May 27 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

The Open Air Fit circuits sessions will boost stability, improve balance & strengthen muscle and bone tissue. The drills we use make you work harder, burning additional calories and also increasing musculoskeletal fitness. Short but powerful bursts of resistance exercises coupled with alternating sets of running or jogging also accelerate weight loss because your body doesn’t have time to get used to the variation it offers.

By moving quickly from one set to the next, layered between sets of running reps, your heart and lungs must also continue working, which promotes your aerobic fitness.

What also makes this dynamic outdoor workout structure a favourite is that it can help you stay interested in and excited about training, and you’ll get none of repetitive aerobic or resistance routines which can become nothing but boring!

Remembering 1916 @ Whitgift Exhibition Centre
May 27 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Remembering 1916 @ Whitgift Exhibition Centre | London | United Kingdom

Remembering 1916 – Life on the Western Front is a major new exhibition telling the story of a pivotal year of the First World War, through a unique series of personal stories.

Follow the fascinating personal testimony of those on both sides of war and uncover a fresh perspective on the battles of Verdun, Jutland and the Somme; and well-known characters such as Lord Kitchener and Manfred von Richthofen, later known as the infamous ‘Red Baron’. In contrast, Remembering 1916 also reveals a sequence of previously untold stories of individuals, on both the Western and Home fronts; ordinary people with extraordinary lives. These lives, events and themes of 1916 are illustrated by more than 600 original artefacts, many of which have never been on public display before.

Highlights

Remembering 1916 presents a range of exceptional and unique objects from the period. Key items for visitors to look out for include two extremely rare first issues of the British trench newspaper, The Wipers Times; original British, French and German uniforms and equipment; a Women’s Royal Air Force uniform; a train station sign from the French city of Verdun, site of one of the most horrific battles of the war; and fabric from the famous red triplane flown by the ‘Red Baron’, Manfred von Richthofen. A number of carefully-created scenes provide the background for many of the items; these begin with the arrival of one man’s conscription papers in an Edwardian hallway, and go on to include British & German trenches and an Edwardian drawing room, providing a snapshot of a moment in the life of an officer home on leave.

In addition to original artefacts, art lovers will be able to take in examples of contemporary work in a broad range of styles. Highlights include a stunning set of pastel portraits of Allied soldiers by Swiss artist, Eugene Burnand; a series of hard-hitting graphic political cartoons by Dutch artist, Louis Raemaekers; examples of work by the ‘soldiers’ cartoonist’, Bruce Bairnsfather; and a selection of iconic recruitment posters.

There will be something for everyone at Remembering 1916. For our younger visitors and their families, Reynard, our ‘flying’ fox, will guide them round the exhibits with a series of trails, hands-on displays and special activities. There will also be a lively programme of holiday activities and community events to get involved in.
