Actors Alive Summer Workshop (ages 5-7)
Jul 30 @ 9:30 am – Jul 31 @ 12:30 pm

The theatre is about telling stories, whether it is for children or adults. But how do we make a story jump off the page and transform it into a piece of theatre? During this three-day workshop, lead by Camilla Gürtler, the children will be working on Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen, focusing on how we create characters onstage and breathe life into the world of a play. We will explore story-telling, characterisation and team work through different acting exercises and games, as well as learning about the other areas of a theatre production such as directing, designing and music composition. At the closing of the final day of the workshop, parents will be invited into class to explore these themes with the children and see what they’ve created. Places are limited so please book ASAP! There are no booking fees when booking in person or over the telephone.

Jul 31 all-day
Perseus and Pegasus - Performance Storytelling with Sally Pomme Clayton @ The Fabularium | South Bank | United Kingdom

For everyone aged 7 and up

SALLY POMME CLAYTON
Sally Pomme Clayton is a pioneering storyteller and writer… who looks deceptively innocent! She has performed across the UK, in 40 Winks Hotel; The Barbican; The Soho Theatre; Northern Stage; The National Theatre; Cheltenham Music Festival; Bristol Old Vic; and 11 Downing Street. Sally Pomme has been a featured artist in many European Storytelling Festivals and toured with The British Council to Spain, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Sweden and Portugal. London art trail – What’s in your DNA? @ Various
Jul 31 – Aug 1 all-day
London art trail - What's in your DNA? @ Various | London | United Kingdom

TWENTY-ONE DNA inspired double helix sculptures will appear across London from Monday 29 June as part of Cancer Research UK’s campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Francis Crick Institute, a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation due to open in 2016.

The sculptures have been designed by leading artists, designers and sculptors from across the world, including Ai WeiWei, Thierry Noir, Zaha Hadid, Orla Kiely, Jane Morgan and twins Chris and Xand van Tulleken.  Each of the designers was asked ‘what’s in your DNA?’ and the results are a mixture of intriguing and colourful designs that are sure to brighten up London this summer.

The sculptures will be based at some of London’s most iconic locations, including Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and St Paul’s Cathedral.  The trail will attract art enthusiasts, families and London workers alike, and not only is each sculpture a unique design, each also has a fun fact about DNA on the base.  For example, did you know you share about 90 per cent of your DNA with a mouse, and about 50 per cent with a banana?

The trail will be live for ten weeks, with the sculptures then being auctioned at Christie’s in September.  All the money raised will go towards the £100million that Cancer Research UK has pledged to raise for the Crick.

When it opens in 2016, the Crick will see more than 1,200 scientists coming under one roof to accelerate the rate of progress in tackling the major diseases, such as cancer, facing the global population.  It is a visionary collaboration between six of the world’s leading medical research organisations: Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Wellcome Trust, Imperial College London, King’s College London and UCL (University College London).

We will explore story-telling, characterisation and team work through different acting exercises and games, as well as learning about the other areas of a theatre production such as directing, designing and music composition. At the closing of the final day of the workshop, parents will be invited into class to explore these themes with the children and see what they’ve created.

Wall to Wall Media Limited – the TV company behind BBC shows “Who Do You Think You Are” and “The Gift” – is producing a new primetime series called “Back in Time for the Weekend”. The series will look at how families spent their leisure time over the decades from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Can you help us with a 1950s Saturday cinema club scene? Filming on Friday 31 July, 10am-1pm at The Gate in Notting Hill. We’ll show films from the 1950’s & are looking for as many children as we can to join us for something a bit different!

Children aged 8 to 13 are welcome, but those aged 8 must be accompanied by an older sibling or friend. Parents can drop off their children & return at 1pm, or wait in a nearby café. There will be fully licensed chaperones, fully-qualified first aiders & breaks throughout.

To join please email rachel.eadie@walltowall.co.uk with your child’s name, age, your name & mobile number.

Please share this with other families you think might like to come along.

Thanks!

Ravilious @ Dulwich Picture Gallery
Jul 31 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Ravilious @ Dulwich Picture Gallery | London | United Kingdom

The first major exhibition to survey watercolours by celebrated British artist Eric Ravilious (1903-42). Well known for his iconic work for Wedgwood, Ravilious is widely considered one of the key figures in mid-20th century British design but he was also one of the finest watercolourists of the century.

His astonishingly prolific career spanned peace and war. With the outbreak of World War II Ravilious was assigned to the Royal Navy as one of the first Official War Artists finding new ways to capture and preserve the fleeting record of passing time. He was killed in 1942 when his RAF plane crashed off the coast of Iceland.

Over 80 watercolours are on display – including famous works like Train Landscape and Westbury Horse as well as rarely seen works from private collections providing an inspiring look at his work between the mid-1920s and his death in 1942. Said to be inspired by the films of Alfred Hitchcock Ravilious’ images rarely contain figures and yet his shadowy interiors and strange perspectives often create a sense of human presence.

Aussie Cabaret Double Bill: ‘Nailed It!’ & ‘A Bit of an Overshare’
Jul 31 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Join Claire Healy and Mackenzie-Spencer & Strano for a hilarious and heartfelt double bill of the finest Cabaret Australia has to offer. Claire Healy in “A Bit of an Overshare” Take a dash of song, a pinch of silly and mix well with a little too much information and you get A Bit of an Overshare. Come and adventure with Claire as she traverses Aldi’s Aisle of wonder, discovers the joy of potatoes, and casts the ring of doom back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. A “small but perfectly formed cabaret gem,” [Theatrebubble], Claire’s unique brand of biting whimsy is injected into a wonderland of original songs. Be enticed into a world of honesty, venom and sweet delights… ‘A sparkling diamond of delicious innuendo, presented with a heart and clarity that’s simply enchanting **** BroadwayBaby.com ‘If Kate Bush had worked on her jokes and taken herself a little less seriously, she could have been Claire Healy’ **** Herald Sun AND AS IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH! Mackenzie-Spencer and Strano present: “Nailed it!” A heartfelt, meaningful examination of life, love, Hogwarts, incest and plant genitalia, “Nailed It!” is a celebration of the insane, brutal and (often) hilarious things we do when we’re in love, falling out of love and even realising our innate solitude. In short, when you are (or really aren’t) nailing it. (Sorry to hammer the metaphor home). Featuring the Green Room Award-winning original songs of Loclan Mackenzie-Spencer (Associate Musical Director, Wicked) and Andrew Strano (nominated: Best Male Cabaret Performer, TheatrePeople.com.au) and a very sparkly jacket. Directed by Casey Gould. ‘The perfect viewing experience’ ***** TheatrePeople.com.au ‘A stripped back and beautiful account of grief, love, insecurity, selfishness and hope’ Australian Stage
