“What’s an organism?”
The question was from my daughter and as I looked across the table, her little face staring intently at the iPad, I allowed myself a quiet smug moment.
If she’s already showing an interest in biology, I thought, perhaps she can become a doctor? Perhaps she’ll live like “Gray’s Anatomy“ and guests around our Christmas turkey will be doctors swapping life saving stories as opposed to Mr NVN waving bits of poultry and cackling that he’s pulled a bird.
“Well,” I replied, choosing my words carefully, aware I might be talking to a future surgeon, “it’s a very small living thing, one of the littlest things that can actually be called alive.”
“Hmm,” she replied a bit confused, “where do they live? Only a woman had one for three hours?”
I realised I’d left the iPad open on the the Daily Mail website and the article wasn’t anything to do with biology, well not in the way I’d thought (follow the link here if you can’t guess the subject).
“Anyway,” she continued, “it says next to it that Justin Bieber is in jail again, how cool is that?”
