Aldi has plans to open a new store in Balham

Postby Annabel (admin) » Sat Dec 09, 2017 2:48 pm

Aldi has plans to open a new store in Balham, it has been confirmed.

If proposals are successful, it will become the supermarket chain’s second branch in Wandsworth alongside one in Tooting High Street.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that Aldi has plans to open a store in Balham High Road.

“It is likely that the store opening will be in late 2018.”

A planning application was submitted to Wandsworth Council on November 23 and is awaiting by the council's planning committee. The public can make comments on the application are until December 14.

I'd rather keep Poundland -been a total butt-saver this year for school Christmas stall tat... Anyway, do we really need a fifth supermarket within 300 meters oof Balham central, as already got Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco and Lidl and with Amazon now doing online I don't see the point of it. Poundland was doing a roaring trade when I was there last week so I wonder why it's closing.

I hope Poundland staff will be given the opportunity to take jobs in Aldi. A chain closing a branch impacts more on its employees than it does on a high street. At least it's being replaced by another business rather than lying empty.
Not everyone will shop at Aldi but the competition will be good for the area.
Surely one can park the 4x4 (with a bit of a struggle as per) in the Waitrose car park, dash along to Aldi clutching Waitrose re-usable bags, do a sizeable shop, then return nonchalantly to put the bags in the car, then nip into Waitrose to load up on freshly made sushi. Who's going to know?

haha, I wish this site has a thumbs up button Talkman. I used to be a supermarket snob, but couldn't give a toss now and the Waitrose carpark gets my blood pressure racing. Have you checked out the Lidl on Plough Lane - it's BRILLIANT.

 Well people will happily buy a VW, a BMW or an Audi, so shopping at Aldi or Lidl ought to be the next step.

So will Sainsbury's and Aldi share a car park...? It's already a disaster as it is!!

Leave the car at home, invest in a sturdy shopper on wheels and your worries will be over(ish).

Just noticed the clock on here is two hours ahead. I am a bit of a night owl, but don't exaggerate NVN
