BUILD TEAM for kitchen extension - any reviews?

Postby newtobalham » Sun Oct 11, 2015 5:39 pm

We are hoping to extend our kitchen and first floor, and are considering using Build Team. Just wondering if anyone has used them and has any feedback? Many thanks!

Hi @newtobalham

I don't have any experience with Build Team but would happily recommend a couple of guys we regularly contract with and that I know do really good work.

Keith at Simply Extensions (they are generally quite busy but it’s because they are very good).
His number is 020 8392 9505 or info@simplyextensions.co.uk

Or Hugh Pettifer at Xtra-space Construction (again v good)
enquiries@xtra-space.com
0208 8714 792

And if you're looking mid to top end for the kitchen itself and want someone who can help you through the whole process we are ourselves a specialist kitchen studio offering German ranges so please feel free to give me a call on 02085435100 or email on julian@oceanhomedesigns.co.uk.

Hope that helps

All the best,

Julian

The company is run by Dermot. His team are polite, clean and the finish was fantastic. :D

Avoid all In one design and builds companies if you can and go down the architect, independent builder route with project manager if need be. Even with a Project manager it will probably be cheaper than these companies and more to the point you will have someone independent protecting your interests and keeping everything in check from contracts, timelines and budgets. Good luck!

I would like to ask why the negative reviews (including mine) were removed from this thread?

Happy to reply.

In addition I did email explaining what I was doing but that may not have reached you, apologies if it didn't.

We remove posts for the following reasons:

1. false positive (new businesses who pretend to be a customer but recommend themselves). These are usually pretty easy to spot as the poster joins and then posts only one or two comments all about how brilliant they are. Whenever we see these we delete them but *sometimes* they are genuine and if we have an email exchange with the user and decide it's real we'll let it stay as a "repost"

2. false negative: same as above but a competitor who is looking to harm a rival

3. disproportionate posts: these are harder to call and actually quite rare. Every now and again we'll get someone who'll admit that they want to "destroy" a business and we feel that the damage incurred from their experience is actually disproportionate to the damage they are looking to cause. I can't remember if we'd had one of these in the last year (they are that rare) but one that does stick in my mind is a user who wanted to "take down" a local business. The business had taken an order, failed to deliver, apologised and then refunded the money. At every opportunity the poster went on with really negative and unpleasant comments. We spoke to both the retailer and the consumer and explained that we'd be happy hosting negative comments but not to host an ongoing "war" against the local shop (who was NOT an advertiser). I really don't like these situations as there is an implied judgement on our part. Thankfully they are very very rare.

4. posts that cause legal action. About once every six months we'll receive a "take down" notice from a firm (usually builders) who threaten to sue if we don't remove a comment that they believe is untrue. At this stage we contact the poster and explain we've been served and ask if they're prepared stand by their comments. NVN is not liable but the original poster is AND if the post is to remain (i.e. the poster does not wish his / her comments to be deleted) we have to pass on the OP's contact details (we ask them to supply us with them) to the firm looking to pursue. 50/50 the poster asks for the comments to be taken down. We do NOT pass on details without explaining to the OP that we will need to do so if they wish for their post to remain.

Hope that answers your questions - please shout if any more.

Thanks so much Annabelle for your honest reply. I can assure you that my review was entirely genuine and I have proof to back it up. Unfortunately I did not receive a message advising me why, however, I totally understand why you have taken the decision you have if you were threatened with legal action. Unfortunately it seems there are very few places I can post my review without it being removed and it looks like a lot of people are in the same position.

There are loads of posts up on mumsnet where people are standing their ground on their negative reviews on Build Team - despite threats of legal action over liable. I think this says it all!

Do not go near this company. We were totally taken in by their website and their convincing sales approach. Unusually for me I did not explore further on forums like this. I would refer anyone to the mumsnet thread on this company. I have a review on there and have been threatened with legal application by Buildteam if I don't remove it. I have refused as what I said is true and I have copious evidence. Also look closely at their positive reviews. What was supposed to be a 12 to 14 week project is still unfinished after 8 months. I lost so much time at work that I have recently postponed my retirement for a year. This has been the most stressful time for us but you will see that we are not alone in this.

I am the poster of an original thread to Nappyvalley and another which can still be found on Mumsnet; but only if you look hard enough. In January 2016, and at Buildteam's direct request, I removed my post to Nappyvalley. After enduring too many awful months, of what should have been a simple side return project, we were desperately worried about what we had found ourselves involved with. I still clung to a final fading hope that this company could deliver as advertised and it was in this spirit that I deleted the Nappy Valley review. I retained the thread on Mumsnet, partially at the request of the followers of the discussion but also in order to allow opportunity for an end of narrative comment which would ultimately provide any appropriate redemption. Something which I thought was only fair in the circumstances. As a family we had sincerely hoped for a happy resolution to our building project. Who wouldn't? We had invested a substantial amount of money in achieving a life long dream for our family life, however, this was not to be and after 9 stressful months of ongoing and unresolved dispute, the torrid details of which are available on request, the loss of trust was absolute and our contract was terminated. Our final experience, and of course this is just my opinion here, is that we were left in a condition so far removed from the Code of Practice of the FMB, with whom one version of this company hold affiliation, that it was shocking.
The details of this are now secondary to other facts which I wish to share as I believe them to be in the public interest. Since I posted an honest review on mumsnet all contributors to this thread, including myself, have been accused of potential libel. More bizarrely, my original post (which was written and posted in December describing some of the reasons why we were so upset in the first place), has now been removed and mysteriously today I find myself at the centre of a copyright infringement claim. It seems a person in America somehow wrote my own review before I did and has used the convenient vehicle of the paid services of the DMCA to have it removed. You can now see my original post, today attributed to an affronted "Mr Douglas Bush", on a website based in India and pre-dating mine at September 2015. As a result of this allegation against me the entire discussion thread has been removed from the Google search engine where up until that moment it was featuring fifth on a search of the company's name. I cannot explain any of this, so I invite any readers of this particular forum to go seek out the mumsnet thread for themselves. I welcome their comments. If nothing else this experience illustrates a vulnerability in the online legal system where we can all be exploited. In short, and returning to the original topic, I don't recommend this company, because ever since we had anything to do with them we have had a horrible time.

Please read the Mumsnet thread before considering Build Team for any work. The Guardian has also published a fascinating article this week exploring what happened to Daisy's review

Thank you Daisy and Medway. I've been watching this with interest (including the Mumsnet discussion!).
