Nursery school or day nursery??

Postby IsabelleB » Tue Apr 29, 2014 8:29 pm

Hi
My toddler (2 years old) is at a day nursery that he likes and which is VERY convenient for a working mum as it opens 8 am to 6pm. It caters for children up to 5 years old, however I wonder whether a day nursery can be as good as a nursery school for a pre-schooler? nursery schools seem to focus more on children's development and readiness to school?
but nursery schools usually have only morning sessions (or afternoons, but rarely full day): how are working mums doing? do you think it is possible to find a good nanny only for the afternoons (and at a reasonable price)?
[note: this is not an ad for a nanny]

Thanks for your help!

As a working mum I found day nursery the best option. Once my daughter moved into the "pre school" room they were much more structured and really prepared her well for school in terms of listening, carpet time, structured day There is an argument that day nurseries should not try and teach phonics etc as it may be taught differently at school and lead to confusion. My daughter loved her nursery and had no problems settling into reception class. I am going to do the same for my son.
Best wishes

We do the nursery school and nanny way but that was based on what was best for our child. We did look at the full day nursery as it did seem so much more convenient but it really wouldn't have worked for my son. Logistically for us parents its more of a hassle but for our son it gives a good balance of socialisation and one on one time within his home environment. There are good nannies out there who are looking for afternoon jobs and some who prefer to do part time work.

If your child is happy and settled in the day nursery and it is convenient for you, then I would keep him in it until school. I believe the first year at school is all about getting children used to a school environment anyway so I don't think there is that much difference in the preperation.

Hi,
If you have the money I think the nanny/ nursery school is a million times better. I am a nanny who trained in many nurseries and really dislike them and have yet to find one I would be happy to send my children to.

But with the nanny you would have to have her full time during the holidays as most nursery schools close. I know very few good nannies who would work afternoons during term time then full time during holidays without some type of flat fee for the whole year.
If you have the space a good au pair might be your answer, not sure what the going rate is for au pairs.
