When I was a nanny I used to take the children to Morden Hall garden centre to look at the fish - as it was indoors and free! Also why not go and spend an hour wandering round Pets at Home - you can see rabbits, snakes, chin chilas, fish - the one on Plugh lane in Tooting/Wimbledon is not that big but enough to occupy for 40mins? Just don't come home with a pet :D

We've got some chickens here - won't swallow up a whole day, but it's free, and so you can pop in and have a chat with them and see if they've laid any eggs, and then go and have a coffee / cake at Eat Play Love next door in the warm?!

Horniman Museum at Forest Hill? Aquarium is v v reasonably priced. They may have some stuffed animals too?

National History Museum for more animals ;-)

Second the suggestion for the Horniman. It's like a mini Natural History Museum with a small acquarium in the basement.

Thanks everyone - really helpful. I was planning on going to Battersea flower place so see the chickens and I stopped in Currys in Wandsworth to pick up something. My girls loved it! They ran up and down the aisles and then played house in the kitchen section. The staff were very nice and didnt seem to mind them pretending to bake cakes and wash clothes! Plus there's a starbucks in there.

another option is the Wandle Playzone. It's cheap and usually open although worth ringing incase they have a party. you've probably already done it but just thought I'd mention!
