Martinhal resort - car hire? Post Reply

Quick question for anyone who has been to Martinhal resort in Portugal - would you recommend hiring a car?

We're going to be self-catering so will need to do the odd supermarket run but one of us could use a local taxi for that if necessary. We'll be there for two weeks though so wondering whether we'll want a car for exploring/excursions or whether there is enough in the resort to keep us (and two small children) occupied.

We haven't got any airport transfers included so have those costs to factor in - would it be worth us paying a bit more to have a car for the fortnight?

I would get a hire car. Its a long transfer from Faro airport and quite a long walk with small children into the town. Plus with the hire car you get the flexibility to explore the area easily. Personally, I don't think I could handle two weeks there without a car as it would have restricted our movements too much.

Car hire is pretty reasonably priced in the Algarve (especially outside of school holidays). That's a quiet area but there are tons of lovely beaches to explore and it is tough to get around without a car.

Also, taxis are pretty crap in my experience out there (not stayed at that resort but in the area). Just not a lot of them so long waits...

I would say definitely get a car, even if just for part of the holiday. It's a fair trek to Sagres and cabin fever would set in after two weeks at Martinhal!

Is it worth getting a car if only going for 4-5 days? Must say I'm not really expecting to leave the resort?!
