Made "redundant" after having a baby?

Postby ClaireGilbert-Law » Sat Nov 11, 2017 9:21 am

Dear NVN readers,

I would like to let you know about a campaign which has just been launched by the charity Maternity Action to extend current employment law to protect pregnant women and new mothers from unfair redundancy.

One in every twenty new mothers in the workplace will be made redundant during pregnancy, maternity leave or the months after returning to work. Some of these redundancies are discriminatory, and many are completely unfair. For further information about the campaign, please see the below links to some of the media coverage from last week's launch.

I am an employment lawyer and a trustee at Maternity Action (MA), a national charity working to defend and enhance maternity rights. MA provides telephone advice to 2,500 pregnant women and new mothers each year, with further advice available in online information sheets on issues including maternity pay, shared parental leave, discrimination and flexible working.

The campaign follows Government’s failure to act on its commitment to review redundancy protections. This commitment was made in January 2017 in response to the Women and Equalities Select Committee inquiry into pregnancy and maternity-related discrimination, which has increased significantly in the past decade according to the EHRC. The campaign has built significant support in Westminster already, including Maria Miller MP, Caroline Lucas MP, Alison Thewlis MP, Jo Swinson MP, Liz Twist MP, Dawn Butler MP and author and Green Party candidate Jennifer Nadel.

If you would like to support the campaign, one of the most important steps you could take is to write to your MP! To do so, please visit https://www.maternityactioncampaigns.or ... -involved/

Thank you very much for taking the time to read the above.

All best wishes,
