Help us find a child therapist for anger management

Postby valade » Sun Apr 02, 2017 9:17 pm

Hi everyone,

Our son 10 yrs old has always had tantrums and outbursts (thankfully at home and not at school). He is very contrarian and gets angry. The situation is getting out of control. We need to find a therapist to help him with strategies to manage his anger. He is willing to go. I feel like he's counting on us, so to speak, to find someone who can help him. I don't want to let him down. So I would really appreciate the recommendation of a parent who's had to deal with this and found some help.

I think he would be responsive to practical, cognitive therapy strategies...

I should note that we have consulted a psychiatrist (without our son) and there is no obvious diagnosis. We may return to psychiatry if we can't get improvements with therapy.

Thanks for your help,
Distraught Mum

Speak with Angus at Battersea Yoga. If he can't help personally I'm sure he can make some recommendations.
There has been an anger workshop recently, albeit not for children, which made me think he will be able to give you some advice.

I do hope, for all of you, that you can get the help you need.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.I can read from your post that you are deeply concerned about your child and have tried several different approaches to helping him.

I am a play therapist and parent coach and may be able to help. My work is very non directive and play based, which can be really helpful for children who aren't able to talk about their experience or can't quite get to the bottom of it through words. Sometimes it helps to play it out.

Have a look at my website playfulpathways.co.uk and feel free to give me a call if you'd like to chat over the phone.

Best wishes,
Aideen

Jacqueline van Roosmalen (www.vanrosetherapy.com) in Dulwich is brilliant, but very booked up so you'll have limited choice of time slots. However, she is a child/adolescent psychotherapist not a psychologist (so not a CBT approach).

I do think it's important to understand the underlying issues before going to cognitive techniques so would give her a call.

Redfern Psychology in Streatham was used by a couple of people I know and they were pleased - they have clinical psychologists/therapists, etc

The Child and Family Practice has a multi-disciplinary team so might be a a good first port of call to see who is the most appropriate specialist to start with ( http://www.tcfp.org.uk/)

Well done for addressing the issue - so many friends/acquaintances hope "it's a phase" and things only get worse (different issues, not just anger management) whereas sometimes in 10 sessions you get a transformation.

Hi there,

When clients ask me, I refer them to Dr Anne-Marie Catterall. She is a clinical physiologist, specialising in children. She is based in Balham and can see you privately in her practice or visit you at home. I always hear great of results, and she is a lovely person too.

Can anyone recommend any books on anger management for kids? My kid has tooth problem and because of that he is always in pain resulting in his anger.

Hi distraught mum,

I'm sorry to hear you're tearing your hair out. I run an established practice of consultant clinical psychologists in SW16 and Surrey area. We all have over 20 years experience of working with children, young people and families. You are very welcome to check out the clinicians on the website and contact us if you still need help.

Hi Distraught Mum,

It's been a few months since you first posted this, how are you and your son?
