The Mayor of London calls for Eddie Catz to be rehoused in the British Land Putney Scheme

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has today approved a British Land residential scheme in Putney which was previously thrown out by Wandsworth Council. Boris declared the plan to redevelop 56-70 Putney High could go ahead conditional to a section 106 clause that that Eddie Catz must have first right of refusal to enter the new scheme.

The scheme was originally opposed by the Wandsworth Council and local residents not only due to size of the proposed building and consequential pollution, but also worry over losing Eddie Catz indoor softplay that has been visited by over a million customers in the last decade and had played an important role in the local community.

"We are thrilled that Boris sees the value Eddie Catz adds to the local community," said owner Darren Johnson about today's decision. "We have been touched by the outpouring of support from our customers, community, our Councillors, our Town Centre Manager and the Better Putney group and the Putney Society."

Mike Ryder, Thamesfield Councillor said of the ruling "we are all disappointed at the Mayor's decision, but at least in his ruling he told the developers, British Land, to do everything they can to ensure the Eddie Catz play centre can stay in that location. That is one consolation, because Eddie's is a much-loved attraction for hundreds of families in the town and I have been supportive of Eddie's all the way."

Eddie Catz is in talks with British Land over the timings for the commencement of the redevelopment and is also considering options for rehousing the centre whilst the new site is being built.
