Re: Daughter's best friend and family quite religious and she is asking why we don't pray

For heaven's sake, take a look at the history of pretty much anything… Sure, the history of philosophy, logic and science, is littered with the corpses of all those fanatical thinkers knocking each other off and declaring war on each other… or perhaps not. As I wrote in my last post, the skisms of ...

Re: Taking the children on an extended holiday

Speaking from experience, after a week or so of separation your youngest will not recognise your partner… which may only last a short time, and the child will not remember it, but your partner will… Most people seem to be cheering you on. I have been on similar long breaks, with my child, but also w...

Re: Daughter's best friend and family quite religious and she is asking why we don't pray

The only thing I can add is that, the UK is a Christian Country and this has helped shape the country. The UK is also a tolerant country. Unfortunately, these two statements don’t really go together. Skisms in christianity still stalk our fair islands. Different sects of christianity have persecute...

Re: Help - tradesman has presented us with totally unexpected bill

Two things I forgot to mention: 1) It definitely won’t look good in court for the tradesman if they try to collect the £2.5k but haven’t provided any written quote for the work in advance. 2) If they try to add VAT on top of the figure you say they quoted for the work, do not stand for it. They shou...

Unfortunately, they all seem to be the “wrong solicitors” ;)

Re: Help - tradesman has presented us with totally unexpected bill

Solicitors have a habit of charging, and charging, and charging… so unless they can resolve the problem with a single letter (likely to cost you £500-600 plus VAT), it is unlikely they are going to save you more money than they cost… Although you may prefer to pay the solicitor than the rip-off trad...

Re: Does being privately educated mean discrimination at job interviews?

…for example, I know some private schools employ Oxbridge tutors to help candidates with Oxbridge entrance.  You'd never get that in a state school... While schools won’t employ “Oxbridge” tutors, that won’t stop parents doing so. And I have certainly heard of state schools with “Oxbridge” clubs, t...

Re: How much do you think I can expect schools fees to increase by

I doubt private education is value for money. If you work out the sums involved over the course of a child’s schooling they add up to a considerable sum. When you start adding inflation and above inflation rises in fees you are probably adding another 50% (or more). Think about other uses for that m...

Re: Daughter's best friend and family quite religious and she is asking why we don't pray

Uhh, you seem to have brought out all the zealots! Firstly, not one has to respect anyone else’s views, in a legal sense, you only have to respect their right to have those views, and not discriminate against them because of those views. This comes from the Equalities Act, which lists certain charac...

Re: SW11 car fines from a local cyclist's camera

I write this as a cyclist, motorcyclist and driver. It is utter ******* that a driver, or motorcyclist for that matter, cannot go within 1.5 metres of a cyclist. You only have to think about the logic of it for a few seconds to realise that this is not what the rules on the hierarchy of road users m...

Re: cleaner refuses to wear mask

I am no lawyer but I fairly confident that unless you have signed an employement contract with your cleaner, you can choose fairly easily to take your business elsewhere… As previously, I am not a lawyer. What @supergirl has written is definitely incorrect. Contracts of employment can come about in...

Re: London Farmers Market = Northcote road??

Historically there have always been market stalls in Northcote Road, but over the years they have found it less and less viable and have gradually diminished. I think it is unlikely that such would be viable in the future. I also believe it very unlikely that actual “farmers” would bring their own g...
