Re: Private School Deposit Timing

You're about to embark on a 100k purchase. That's about what you'll pay for one child reception to year 6. My advice is to get the school you want. Do you really really want Thomas? Then you probably will have to pay 2 deposits or be prepared to spend a portion of the time in state school to get eit...

Re: Mum's opinions please.

Make sure if you say yes that you plan it with her... Lunches, dinners, childcare, etc... You are not a free holiday... It should be great for both of you.

Re: Playgroup/playground etiquette

Very tricky. If my child was older (like 3-4) I'd get them to apologize with a quick sorry and also apologize to the Mum. However, under 3, it is harder to get kids to apologize and they really don't know what the real meaning is although it depends on each child. My son didn't really have verbal sk...

Re: Losing Sept School Deposit Rant

I'd go plead your case. I agree that you knew it would be an issue, but most places are quite ok with paying the deposit back as long as your account is in good order. Especially since it is a big move, just not a jump to a new local place. Save the legal stuff for when they refuse. Good Luck. I rea...

Re: Waiting list number - success?

I was number 5 on a 30 intake school 3 years ago. We got in for the start of Year 1 in July prior to the year. We moved up the list to number 2 by September but was overtaken 3 times before being offered a place. Don't fret... The lists do move and number 4 is quite encouraging.

Re: Help with work...

I think most nursery settings look for some kind of qualifications. Here is a good place to start: http://www.ukopencollege.co.uk/childcare-courses-childcare-courses-c-247_5.html?zenid=ps9gnh2icns4t51h3mgt6ai9n4 You might also try Lambeth college, you might find that you can qualify for a grant or s...

Re: Difference between private and state

Going back to the differences between private and state... 1. Private tends to have longer days and more holidays. Kids from as young as 8 will be in school until around 5ish. This is so they can play more sport. Some also go on Saturdays 2. Sports are more ingrained into the curriculum. Meaning eve...

Re: What age does tutoring normally start?

Ah, I was thinking state to private at year 3!! But if you are going to prepare for common entrance exam, I'd start beginning of year 5.

Re: What age does tutoring normally start?

I'm not sure when kids are "assessed and tested" for a prep school place. I'd work out about 3-6months before the assessment as enough time depending on how they are progressing in reading and maths. But to be honest, I'd limit the amount of tutoring unless your kids are really struggling ...

Re: 'State till 8' - how?

Many schools offer a bigger class from Year 3. Basically this means there are anywhere from 10-20 places open for kids to join the year. Class size ratios go up slightly or a new class is brought in to make the year bigger but then usually it is more important to have smaller classes in Reception to...

Re: Question on live out nannies

I would encourage her to eat with the children and what they are eating. Kids tend to eat more varied foods if this is the case. If she wants something different, she could provide her own lunch. I would not necessarily buy anything specific for her. Just make sure if you have something in the house...
