Go see Town Hall Cherubs!

I was fortunate enough to drop my own little cherubs at school yesterday and then hot-foot it over to the Battersea Arts Centre to watch Town Hall Cherubs, their Christmas show for 2 to 5 year olds.

I implore you all to go; it's a treat from beginning to end. The group of 3 year olds that I saw enjoy the 50 minute production were entirely captivated and enthralled by the whole immersive experience. And immersive it is, from sitting on shiny golden cushions at the beginning to following the two actors through various magical rooms.

And so begins the adventure, as the children are led up the main staircase, only to find a real, life-size cherub snoring sweetly beneath a fluffy, white, cloud-like duvet. Imagine the delight on little faces as he is awoken by a gentle tickling on his feet. Once awake, the cherub sweetly engages the children in where he has come from, and they realise there are many more just like him perched around the edges of the ceiling.

Then the trail begins and they follow a garland into a room with bells and chimes playing, where they discover a giant kaleidoscope. Everyone crowds underneath to admire the artwork of the mosaic floor and the famous Lavender Hill bees as the giant mirrors spin...

Then it's onto another room of ice-capped mountains and some funny little balloon guys that the children play with for a while before they spot a little door cut out of a bigger door. Some were not so sure and formed an orderly queue behind the cherub, who was sensibly waiting for the big door. Once the small door opened though, none could resist and they all crept through for the final, magical room. Suffice to say there's glitter, sparkle, wiggling and giggling and boys, girls and grown-ups alike loved it!

A brilliant introduction to theatre for little ones, a wonderful Christmassy show and the chance to explore this great cultural hub in our midst.
