I was really surprised at this given that the shop is right in the middle of a fairly modern development without floorboards and hollow walls for mice to scurry and hide...

Red faces at poundland I hope!

Thats not a myth; they can flatten their rib cage and fit through quite small gaps, although that refers to sliding under doors rather than through a round hole. A lot of restaurants have sonic repellants and store food in cold stores that resemble vaults, so i really wouldnt worry too much.

"I wonder how many chocolate bars they'd have to sell to pay the fine? Yes, yes I know it's one hundred thousand bars"

PEDANT ALERT!
Likely a lot more than 200,000 bars, taking cost of said bars and business overheads into consideration.

I saw this article and it puts me off eating or buying food anywhere at Southside, because if Poundland has mice wouldn't you think that all of Southside has them? Mice can get through holes as small as the width of a pencil apparently (unless that's a lie of the vermin industry) and I doubt that Poundland is so secure that mice couldn't get in/out and into the other food shops.

where there's blame there's a fine, however an imminent fox or rat cull are not on the agenda as WBC would have to fine itself

Wandsworth Council should take some action over its own mouse infestations.
