Hair today, gone tomorrow. Love a hairdo while it lasts…

It was the perfect Friday lunchtime treat.  Work like a demon all morning and leave the house in the usual rush (even without children underfoot, why does that always happen?) for a short hop, skip and jump onto the Northern Line from Balham up to Clapham North.  Bike wasn’t an option as helmets and hairdos aren’t compatible and public transport would mean no traffic to contend with or parking space to find.  Add to that the fact that Live True London’s Clapham North branch is literally under the railway arches, I figured it wouldn’t be far from the tube.

And I was right.  Ten minutes later I arrived at the bright and breezy salon, a stylish urban shop front of glass and bright lights nestling neatly alongside the pleasing brick curve of the railway bridge. The salon is large and airy with chairs and mirrors running along either side, with colourful bottles of product dotted around and the basins tucked at the back so you don’t have to be on display while having your hair washed.  The team greeted me warmly, offered any number of hot or cold drinks to add to my feeling of Friday R&R and then my stylist Szindy asked what I was after.  I explained my slightly mad hair – natural curl which is more natural frizz unless I blow-dry it myself, an early morning ritual that I’ve got down to approximately 2 minutes.  She looked fleetingly sad that I spend so little time on what, for her, is clearly an art form.  But it’s something she’s obviously very good at. I am not.

We talked volume and then we talked curls.  Curls that I am usually trying hard to pull out or straighten.  After a haircut I’m usually delighted with my smooth, slick hair and endeavour to sleep sitting up in order to avoid bed-hair (curls) and the need to wash it again the very next day.  But Szindy suggested we tried something a bit different.  Why not? It’s not every day I get my hair done.

6First stop, that hair wash and an extremely relaxing head massage.  This is what Fridays could be for, I realise, and make a mental note to take some time out for me a little more often.   Then back into my chair with Szindy set to work her magic.  A bit of mousse here, a squirt of spray there, hairdryer, clips, tongs and half an hour later, with the occasional rumble of trains overhead keeping me grounded in my favourite urban environment, I’d gone curly.  Gorgeous, bouncy, shiny curls.  Curls which I don’t really have but curls which I got, if only for a while.  Swish, swish, flick.

There’s a great deal to be said for treating yourself to a blow-dry.  Time out for you and you leave feeling all fresh and new and a bit like you could be (an extra) in a Pantene ad.  Clearly not Jennifer Aniston calibre, but maybe one of those other girls throwing their heads around in a reflection somewhere.  Sunglasses on (it was sunny, I wasn’t getting carried away) and out into the the bright Friday afternoon.  Back on the tube I felt slightly like everyone was looking at me thinking, wow, big (silly?) hair!  But of course they weren’t.  Too busy reading the ES or playing Candy Crush.

Swish, swish, flick.  Back in Balham with a spare half hour I decided this me-time was time well spent, so I graced TK Maxx with my new hairdo, spent some money I didn’t know I was about to spend and then swished my way to pick my boys up from school.  They looked at me slightly unusually.  “What have you done different, Mum?”  Swish, swish, flick.  “Oh, I had a blow-dry – what do you think?”  “Err, yeah, looks cool. What’s for tea?”

A dinner party over at friends’ ended up with disco dancing in the kitchen until 2.30am.  Suffice to say, I didn’t sleep sitting up.  But it was nice while it lasted.  Thank you, Live True London.  Great salon, great stylist, great hair… if only for a while.
