Help/advice needed with CFS or Fatigue pb

Postby Lily pomme » Wed Jan 10, 2018 8:08 pm

Hi there,

I am struggling with an undiagnosed condition, which is very similar to CFS and a thyroid dysfunction.
I have almost all the symptoms ( unexplained weight gain/ inability to lose weight despite diet/exercise, almost constant fatigue, occasional dizziness after mental effort, puffy face, sensitivity to cold, muscle weakness) which has drained me and left me depressed.

this has been going on for 4 years, it started after a winter viral infection.

I cant afford a private doctor and have been tested for all thyroid tests , which came back normal.
I'm aware that the normal range doesnt mean a lot, and you can still have a hormonal issue if tests are deemed normal.

What can I do??!
Is it actually possible to convince an NHS GP to do more tests? How??

If anyone has/ had similar pbs and has found a great GP/Doctor, i would love to hear it!

I'm 33 , no children.

You poor thing, how miserable! I am battling with a diagnosed problem and it’s very hard so am sending you huge sympathy as I am sure a lack of diagnosis makes it even harder!Blood tests vary, there are also a wide range of tests which only specialists can request.

My suggestion is to try and have another set of bloods done, possible to change gp and find someone with a different perspective/experience.

If it’s your thyroid you need to look at your TSH level. If it’s at the high end then you could ask your doctor for low dose thyroxine tablets. I met someone yesterday who had fibromyalgia with symptoms that sound a bit like yours. Worth a google. I’m not a doctor though.

You could try getting tested for celiac disease or gluten intolerance as the thyroid issues might only be a symptom of something else.

Example: Friend of mine suffered similar symptoms (exhaustion etc). Eventually diagnosed as Celiac disease which was affecting their parathyroid glands and causing them to become over-active etc.

Probably unlikely that you have same story but I'd recommend a look.

I agree, if you haven't removed gluten from your diet that it's a good place to start to help with Hashimotos/Thyroid issues. However it's worth getting tested by your GP, before you eliminate ( I was told it's better to be eating it for at least 6 weeks before the test) . Beware though that a negative celiac result doesn't mean your body isn't having issues with gluten.
I've sent you a PM .

Remove caffeine and refined sugar from your diet - use water-processed decaf and natural sugar alternatives (I’m not a fan of deprivation and denial!) - take a Vitamin B complex. And at the same time pursue a second opinion with a different GP - you are entitled to a second opinion. Fingers crossed...

Hi Lilly,

Have you ever considered Lyme disease? It can present similar symptoms.
If you have been exposed to a possible Tick bite, I would look into it.xx
