Hopefully you know that the water near Cape Town is extremely cold...

For that reason, as our daughter loves the beach and swimming, when we went to South Africa on a family holiday, we opted for staying near Durban, which meant another internal flight. We rented a house in Zimbali Lodge and it was fab.

Enjoy!

I go regularly to Cape Town as my brother lives there, the last two times I have found amazing houses on Airbnb. The first was an amazing house on Clifton 4th beach which is beautiful, but a lot of steps up and down to the house and the second was in Camps bay which is great for restaurants, popping to the shop for groceries etc and is safe. The beach there is also beautiful, the water is very cold so not many people go in but still great for walks and for the kids to play. I would say Camps bay with children is a good base. Easy to walk to the front for breakfast/brunch and we found it handy on a couple of long days out sightseeing to just grab something to eat there rather than cook . A lot of places you have to load up and drive, Camps bay is all walking distance. Enjoy your time there, id love to mention an amazing tour we did with Utando it was a highlight for us and the kids to see various projects they are working on with the locals like growing vegetables in the townships and having singing groups with the elders all great fun and a brilliant way to see the other side of life there!

This sure does sound great! I may be a bit biased (being from south africa) but I really do believe that there is something for everyone there and therefore such a perfect place to have a family holiday/reunion.

In Cape Town, there are different areas to choose from. The waterfront is more the touristy area but still very pleasant and worth a visit. Nearby you have plenty of restaurants to choose from and if you were interested in doing a trip over to Robin Island or even just heading out on a Sunset Cruise, this is where you would depart from. (There is more 'hotel-style' accomodation here as well as serviced apartments/aparthotels).

You then have Greenpoint and Seapoint which lead you from the Waterfront around the bay to Clifton and Camps Bay areas. There are usually great villas or family homes to rent in the hills or higher up Seapoint. (I would also always recommend hiring a car in SA, especially if you have kids as this is the easiet way to get around). Further recommendations on areas to stay would be Bantry Bay, Fresnaye or even Camps Bay, although Camps Bay is on the other side of the mountain to the CBD. Sometimes traffic can be a pain if staying here but if you dont mind driving an extra 15/20 min around the bay or over the mountain the sunsets are fantastic!

If you dont actually mind being a little way from the main hustle and bustle of Cape Town, Llundudno is further along the coast heading towards Hout Bay. Once again you will see many very large holiday homes here and I am sure many of these get rented out. Otherwise you could stay in the wine region as well (Stellenbosch or Franschoek), however these are a bit further away once again. I would say base yourselves closer to Cape Town and then perhaps do day trips to the Winelands or the Penguin beach (Boulders Beach).

Hope this info helps :)

What an amazing place to holiday!! We got married there and had the most beautiful place in St James with ten bedrooms a pool and optional catering it's next to
Kalk Bay with gardens overlooking the sea. And a tidal pool aswell without the famous Brighton beach style huts.

Also we used Charmaine for inhouse catering

Recommendation needed for large family holiday to South Africa

by Gillak » Mon Dec 18, 2017 3:29 pm

Hi

We are trying to plan a family trip to South Africa next year for my parents, myself and my brother and other halves and children, so 6 adults and 6 children aged between 8 and 1. We are looking for a house with a pool and don't plan to travel too far so the accommodation is important. Can anyone recommend anywhere or even point me in the direction of which areas would be good and safe for a family group? I am thinking either beach or wine region near Cape Town.

Thanks!
